How Much You Can Love

Being a parent is by far the most rewarding and the most challenging position I've ever taken on in my life. I can think of only one thing more challenging, probably being a soldier. And nothing remotely as rewarding - although saving lives in any capacity is definitely up there. That's how intense it is - like life and death. Not always, but it stretches you to the limits of who you think you are, everyday; and that is no easy task. You will love like you never imagined possible.

And, you will at times, turn into some sort of devil-woman you never knew was inside you.

It is easy to love your child, but it is really hard to remain composed at all times. As you know, I've read innumerous books on the subject, attend parenting classes, and have a close circle of parent friends to kvetch or delight with; but still I have found I am just not going to be that perfect mother I thought I could be when Marley was a little bun in the oven...

or even when she was this tiny. (look how sweet she is!)

Your child will teach you, inspire you, make you laugh...

And one day, being naked will become a top priority for your sweet thing - and you'll be so excited, because along with being naked, comes an extreme interest in the potty. Diapers be gone!

And then, your child will teach you what it's like to feel terrorized as she rips her diaper off, runs around the room in circles; and as all of your parenting lessons fly out the window you shout, beg, scream, "No! No! Don't Do IT!"...and, She pees all over your carpet.

As she rubs her hands around in it and you try to regain your composure whilst heading for the cleaning supplies, muttering like Yosemite Sam, you realize your child is growing up, exploring, and has just taught you again - how much you can love.
